Metro-North Train Time App Reviews

Broken

This app could do a lot more, could be much more useful, but it isnt. Usually does what little its designed to do just fine. Usually.

Whats everyone complaining about?

Its purpose is to show train times.

Worthless! Never works!

This app never works. Its useless and unreliable. Whats the point when it its never able to connect to the Internet???

Clunky

Metro North is always sending out emails stating that this app is having difficulties or not working. Its pretty much not working whenever I need it. So, go ahead and download, but ignore the ads you see about this purported most excellent app. Its really not that great and does the absolute bare minimum when it is working. Bottom line is that this app could be heaps better.

Unstable

Some time ago I wrote a one star review hoping the MTA would take note and address the issues. Nope. The ap is frequently down, three times in the last week. The promised ease of finding your next train is a lie. Its painfully slow and god forbid there is an issue like winter storm Jonas it does not update for current conditions but only shows scheduled service. My advice is to use the website. If you ever wonder why MN is so expensive this is part of your answer.

Nice app and does what it is meant for

I use this daily to know the platform my train will be at GC, so I can save a few seconds instead of looking at those monitors. As others have mentioned its frustrating sometimes that its slow and ends up with the spinning wheel but again I use this when I start at work and heading to GC, so I can directly rush to the track my train is on and this helps when I am close to the start time.

GET onTIME MNR INSTEAD

The interface is garbage the setup is to complicated and there is no arrival countdown to the side. It may be somewhat useful if it was less confusing.

Built by non-commuters

So, heres the thing: You really need this app to work when youre in GCT and looking for your train. It needs to work instantly and reliably. The unfortunate problem is that it appears to need a signal, and if it cant find a good one, which is often the case in GCT - especially with AT&T - you get NOTHING. A spinner. With a side-helping of frustration. Id rather have stale information with an alert stating that its stale, than to be staring at a loading screen for minutes while your anger level grows logarithmically with the delay time. You might as well just walk to the boards and look. Which means that you dont need this app. Until they fix this serious flaw, use the "onTime MNR" app. It has ads, and the track numbers arent as reliable, but youll get train information (departure times, etc.) almost instantly and reliably. And you can scroll back in time to see when your train is arriving. Unlike the onTime app, the other frustrating "feature" of the MetroNorth app is that you cant scroll backwards in time, so you can use the schedule as, you know, A SCHEDULE. Ever taken a new train or a different one than you normally do? Dont forget to see when it arrives or you wont be able to once your train has left the station. I dont think the developers of this app are commuters or actually have ever used this app to commute in/out of GCT. If they did, this would be a significantly better app. And oh: WHERE ARE THE DIGITAL TICKETS?! NJT has figured this out already! But really, what do you expect from MetroNorth; they can barely run their trains on time as it is.

Helpful...when it works

I had been using this app for quite some time, when out of nowhere it lost all of my favorite itineraries. Now I can no longer see a list of stations to recreate them, so the app is basically bricked. It could benefit from a few tweaks as well, like many others have suggested, like GPS location and alerts for delays or gate changes.

Disappointing

Seems wasteful that MetroNorth created this clunky app. The OnTime MNR app is far more user friendly.
